The Crisis

Forests Are Disappearing

Sub-Saharan Africa loses over 3.9 million hectares of forest every year—driven largely by charcoal production. In Benin alone, deforestation has accelerated at an alarming rate as growing urban populations demand more cooking fuel. The traditional charcoal value chain is a cycle of destruction: cut trees, burn them inefficiently, repeat.

This is not just an environmental crisis—it is a human one. Degraded land means degraded livelihoods, food insecurity, and communities displaced by the very forces meant to sustain them.

Our Response

Carbon Negative by Design

Bamboo is nature's answer to deforestation. It grows 60 times faster than trees, reaches maturity in 3-5 years, and regenerates from its root system after harvesting—no replanting required. A single acre of bamboo absorbs 12 tonnes of CO₂ annually, far exceeding the emissions from our entire pyrolysis and distribution process.

VieVert's bamboo plantations do not just avoid carbon emissions—they actively remove carbon from the atmosphere. Our biochar byproduct, when applied to soil, sequesters carbon for hundreds of years while improving agricultural productivity. This is not carbon neutrality. This is carbon negativity.

Our Phase 1 cultivation site in Benin's Ouémé-Plateau region is designed as a model for land restoration—transforming degraded agricultural land into thriving bamboo ecosystems that serve both environmental and economic purposes.
